Some thoughts on covering West Virginia elections
A look at how Ogden and its political reporter do their part for the Republican Party
On Tuesday, I wrote about the Wheeling Intelligencer's editorial celebrating their birthday as a newspaper and in particular, the "wide range of opinion" found on their editorial page. Beyond the Intelligencer's "wide range," another sentence in the editorial got me thinking about the paper's election coverage: . . .

Biden’s decision to end the Afghan War
A look at the predictable Republican response
Earlier today, the Associated Press published
The costs of the Afghanistan war, in lives and dollars
From the "Human costs" section:
American service members killed in Afghanistan through April: 2,448.
U.S. contractors: 3,846. Afghan national military and police: 66,000. Other allied . . .
Inflation, inflation, inflation: The GOP sends Senator Shelley Moore Capito her talking points
The senator has apparently never heard of supply and demand
Here is Senator Capito earlier this week:
No matter how Senate Democrats may try to spin it, inflation is nothing more than a hidden tax on the American people. pic.twitter.com/1QeYJepqo3

Joseph Gouzd, Viatris union president, commenting on what he has heard from from his representatives: “We’ve heard nothing. We’ve heard all kinds of horse shit from A to Z.”
West Virginia’s senators are doing little, if anything, to prevent the closure of the Viatris Morgantown plant
With just a couple days left before the former Mylan plant in Morgantown closes for 1500 workers, news reports suggest that very little is being done to save the plant. Where are West Virginia’s senators? From In These Times reporter, Hamilton Nolan:
Ask Gouzd [president of the worker’s union] what he is hearing from his . . .

Exxon lobbyist: Capito and "kingmaker" Manchin are "crucial" to the company
And here I thought they worked for West Virginians (with Friday update)
This story, from Britain's Channel 4 News, broke yesterday:
Senior Exxon lobbyist captured on video names 11 senators "crucial" to company: Capito, Manchin, Sinema, Tester, Hassan, Barrasso, Cornyn, Daines, Coons, Kelly and Rubio.

Calls Manchin "Kingmaker" and says speaks with office weekly. https://t.co/c3TOGaICgi
More reactions to yesterday’s Senate vote to establish a January 6 commission
Doing the math, Senator Capito’s bogus excuse, and a different take on what this may mean for the Democrats
The vote totals
The vote was 54 in favor of moving forward with the commission to 35 against. Of course, under Senate rules, the 35 wins the vote:
51 senators can seat a Supreme Court justice but 54 senators can’t establish an independent commission to investigate a violent insurrection in their own damn building.

Shelley and Joe make news
Following WV’s senators
Senator Shelley Moore Capito
A couple of times a week, for most of the 7+ years that I have been doing this blog, I use a search engine to see what WV’s two senators and the area’s congressman have been doing. Until this year, the results were quite predictable. Joe Manchin was always making news, David McKinley would sometimes make . . .
