Baseball on the cheap #784
Another look at Bob Nutting’s profit-producing baseball team
It’s the same old story: the player gets good and then he asks Pittsburgh Pirates management to be paid what he is worth. Rather than paying, the Pirates then trade the player for (low-salaried) “prospects.” If any of these prospects develop into anything marketable, they are then traded for more prospects. Rinse and repeat. This year it is . . .

Delegate Pat McGeehan on guns and abortion
He’s not quite the constitutional conservative that he thinks he is
Last Tuesday, Bishop Mark Brennen of the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston issued a statement calling for more action on gun violence. (The Wheeling Intelligencer carried it here.) From that statement:

This morning, not one, but two of the Intelligencer’s syndicated columnists suggested that it’s time for Trump to leave . . .
Senator Capito takes an unpopular stand with her base
The senator votes to advance a bill to protect same-sex and interracial marriage
Over the years, this blog has frequently been critical of West Virginia Senator Shelley Moore Capito's unwillingness to take a position on a controversial proposal until the issue has been decided. On Wednesday, Capito bucked that tendency and voted for further consideration of the Respect for Marriage Act:
