Four lawsuits against WV’s Secretary of State settled (updated 9/19)
While other media examined the suits, Ogden devoted 665 words to WV Secretary of State Mac Warner’s outrage. (It’s the least they could do for a favorite.)
A short quiz
Here’s how several WV news sources headlined a story about the results of a lawsuit against the secretary of state. See if you can spot the headline that appeared on the front page of today’s Wheeling News-Register:
- A. Ex-Secretary of State Employees Settle Lawsuits Over Firings
- B. 4 Warner lawsuits . . .
Morrisey chutzpah on the debates
Patrick Morrisey attacks Joe Manchin on the canceled debate; the Intelligencer covers for him by lying about what happened
I think psychologists call this "projection"
As statewide news reports noted yesterday, a second debate will not take place because the Morrisey campaign failed to meet the necessary deadlines. (See next post down.)
Earlier today, Republican senatorial candidate Patrick Morrisey retweeted this from Nathan Brand:
. . .How many Manchin-Morrisey debates will there be?
The answer depends upon whom you ask
The media have been reporting two
All the reports that I have previously read suggest two: October 14 in Wheeling and November 1 in Morgantown
Today, Republican candidate Patrick Morrisey says three
NEWS: I'm excited to have accepted three statewide debates. Liberal Joe Manchin needs to answer for his record of . . .
Yes, it's the obvious reason
A recent poll explains why the Intelligencer didn't carry last week's AP story and map that showed a significant rise in local mortality rates from Trump's rollback of EPA emission standards
Last week the Associated Press provided a detailed analysis of the recently-released EPA analysis of the health effects of President Trump's rollback of Obama's EPA standards. (I wrote about it here.) The AP article included the above map which very-effectively visualized a key finding of the study:
Nationally, . . .
The Wheeling area just lost another independent source of journalism
Ogden Newspapers buys the Washington Observer-Reporter
The Observer-Reporter reported yesterday:
The Observer Publishing Co. (OPC) announced it has signed a letter of agreement to sell its assets to Ogden Newspapers.
OPC publishes the daily Observer-Reporter, the weekly Almanac and numerous monthly and special . . .

West Virginians will see two senatorial debates
What about debates between congressional candidates – how about McKinley/Fershee?
Not likely
Reporter Jake Zuckerman examined the possibility of congressional debates in West Virginia on the front page of today’s Charleston Gazette-Mail and found a lack of interest by Republican candidates statewide. Here is what he said about WV’s 1st District:
In the 1st District, West Virginia University law . . .
Saturday morning Intelligencer front-page headline: “W.Va. Leaders Support Kavanaugh”
What would you expect from Republicans who think Tim Armstead and Evan Jenkins are qualified to be WV Supreme Court justices?
I had two reactions to Ogden political reporter Steven Allen Adams’s front page article:
Over half of the article comes from quotes from WV Republican legislative leaders Mitch Carmichael and Roger Hanshaw who both support the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh. Who cares what the state’s Republican leaders think? Do they get a vote? . . .
