The Wheeling Alternative
The plot thickens on the "Ogden Newspapers buys ski area papers" story
Earlier today, Robert Nutting sold Seven Springs to Vail Resorts (a co-incidence, I'm sure)
I've been following Robert Nutting and Ogden Newspapers acquisition of numerous newspapers in ski country in the western United States. From Pittsburgh Trib-Live, earlier today:
Pittsburgh Pirates owner Bob Nutting is selling his three ski resorts in the Laurel Highlands — Seven Springs Mountain Resort near Champion, Hidden . . .

More on Ogden’s newspaper buy
The editor of the recently purchased Aspen paper tries to reassure her readers and employees
Here is an update on Ogden’s purchase of western newspapers (see two posts down) from the editor of the Aspen Daily News. (Click on "Billionaire family" to get to the article.)
Robert Nutting is routinely listed as among the wealthiest @MLB team owners. His family reportedly boasts a $1.1 billion net worth, with a majority $630 . . .

Mutually exclusive: the Wheeling Intelligencer and full disclosure
(with updates)
It’s quiz time
d. A foreign concept
If you plug "full disclosure" into the Intelligencer's homepage search engine, the phrase appears only a few times and not as it applies to the newspaper. Media sources usually note (often parenthetically) when there may be a conflict or an appearance of conflicted . . .

Sports wagering: from “bad bet” to “go-to investment"
A look at the evolution of Wheeling’s “newspapers” and their owner, Robert Nutting, on sports betting
Betting on sports moves from “bad” to “good”
The first editorial that I could find about sports wagering in our local Wheeling “newspapers” was from August 2015 and it was clearly negative:

From this weekend’s Wheeling News-Register editorial: “Plagiarism is plagiarism, whether you’re a student or a college president.” What about newspapers?
Before it demands accountability from West Liberty University, shouldn’t Ogden get its own house in order first?
Some examples of plagiarism by Wheeling papers
Recently, in editorials
In the last month, the Wheeling Intelligencer printed two plagiarized editorials. Most recently, on October 4, the Intelligencer published an editorial on Ohio’s prisons. Over half of the editorial is word-for-word from an AP news report. (See here). On . . .
Business as usual
Another week, another plagiarism
Yes, it is another Wheeling Intelligencer plagiarism. Today’s editorial, “Fix Ohio’s Prison System,” most likely came from one of Ogden’s Ohio papers where it was stolen from an Associated Press reporter. Here is the first five paragraphs of a report by the AP’s Farnoush Amiri on September 15. I have highlighted in bold what today’s . . .
To the Wheeling News-Register’s credit, at least they changed the number of years
Too lazy to write a new editorial, the Wheeling News-Register celebrates its birthday by recycling an editorial it ran two years ago today
“Newspapers on the cheap” has reached a new low. Without acknowledging that it had done so, today’s News-Register ran the same editorial it did on September 22, 2019.* (In fairness to Ogden, there were two differences; today’s editorial twice updated the age of the newspaper.)
Our local Ogden newspapers do something that I’ve never . . .
