The Wheeling Alternative
West Virginia and cancer-causing chemicals
A new ProPublica risk assessment tool
West Virginia’s history is long on placing private sector profits over the public’s health. (Governor Justices recent appointment of former coal company officials to the Public Service Commission would only reinforce that point.) As a result, the state figures to be among the worst on most state-by-state comparisons of health-related issues. . . .
Is this the worst Wheeling Intelligencer editorial ever? (with 11/3 update)
That’s a high bar but today’s editorial on Ohio’s Keith Faber deserves some consideration for that honor
This morning’s Wheeling Intelligencer editorial tells us:
Faber Serves Ohio Well
As it is written, the editorial makes little sense
“Faber” is Keith Faber, Auditor for the state of Ohio. However, the first two-thirds of the editorial is about Kathleen McGuiness, Faber's counterpart in Deleware, who . . .
Nothing changes (except the date)

More recycled editorials
Today's first editorial is two-weeks-old and comes from Ogden’s Elkins paper, The Intermountain. The editorial comes out against bullies:
It’s Time to End Bullying in W.Va.
Coming soon: “Don’t Litter,” “Avoid Texting While Driving,” and “Don't Forget to Get Your Flu Shot.”

McKinley vs. Mooney update #1
Battle of the Republicans
Alex Mooney
Not much to go with here. Search engines suggest that the news coverage of Mooney is still primarily focused on the possible ethics violations connected with his campaign expenditures. Mooney's twitter account doesn’t help much either: six of his first ten posts are about rugby. (At one time, Mooney apparently played . . .
Sports wagering: from “bad bet” to “go-to investment"
A look at the evolution of Wheeling’s “newspapers” and their owner, Robert Nutting, on sports betting
Betting on sports moves from “bad” to “good”
The first editorial that I could find about sports wagering in our local Wheeling “newspapers” was from August 2015 and it was clearly negative:
More Legalized Gambling Bad Bet

The McKinley/Mooney battle begins
West Virginia’s congressional redistricting has been completed and the results will pit District 1’s current congressman, David McKinley, against District 2’s Alex Mooney. I would think that we will be seeing and hearing from both of them right up until the primary next spring. Both were on WV Metro News this week. Here are my reactions.
