WV coronavirus update
Despite incentives, the state missed Governor Justice's June 20 target goal of 65% of its residents with at least one dose
The state of West Virginia gave away money, guns, and trucks for prizes and the governor's dog issued a special plea ("do it for Babydog"), but West Virginia still did not meet Governor Jim Justice's goal of 65% WV residents with at least one coronavirus shot by June 20th. Here are today's statistics from the WV Department of Health and Human Resources:
That's too bad but given the devotion to Donald Trump by a large percentage of West Virginia's adults, that result should not be surprising. As I noted last month, there is a connection between a state's support for Trump and its inoculation rate. Here is a more recent statistical correlation:
Correlation of Biden vote share and adult Covid vaccination rate is now at .847. (CDC data) pic.twitter.com/J2hQHKYUIH

Visually, here is a map from today's Center for Disease Control website. See if you can figure out the likelihood that a state voted for Trump:
Finally, from Charleston G-M reporter, Phil Kabler:
Justice says $10 million vaccination incentive sweepstakes will continue even though vaccination rates have dropped, not increased: "It is taxpayer dollars, but it's coming from the federal government. It's not coming out of our pocket in West Virginia."

Ah, Gov, it's still coming out of my pocket. Given what appears to be the unlikeliness that most of these holdouts will ever take the vaccination regardless of incentives, is this the best use of taxpayer dollars?
