In May, I wrote about Sinclair Broadcasting's growth in local television news. (See here and here.) Early that month, Sinclair bought Tribune Media for $4 billion making it America's largest local television station owner and it will soon be capable of reaching 70% of America. (WTOV, Channel 9 in Steubenville, is one of its stations.) As I noted, Sinclair's local newscasts have become more and more conservative with its "Terrorism Alert Desk," pro-Trump news, "must-run" right-wing stories, and bizarre editorials by Mark Hyman. While Sinclair's purchase of Tribune Media did get some national media attention at the time, the media spotlight has dimmed since then. Dimmed until Sunday night when John Oliver's "Last Week Tonight" on HBO devoted a major portion of his show to it. (Note -- as with last week's segment on coal and Bob Murray, the Oliver's segment is long by conventional standards.)
Here it is:
Keep up the good work, John.
