“Leftist” Senator Capito gets a primary challenger who says she’s way too liberal
Note – I am not making this up
From Dave Mistich at West Virginia Public Broadcasting:
The president of a group that opposes abortion rights and LGBTQ protections has announced he is running for U.S. Senate, challenging Republican incumbent Shelley Moore Capito in the May primary election.
The candidate is Allen Whitt, who is current president of the West Virginia Family Policy Council. About the Council:
The group’s website says they occasionally partner with the Family Research Council, which the Southern Poverty Law Center has designated as a hate group.
Among Capito's liberal sins, Whitt’s campaign website notes Capito’s one vote against the repeal of Obamacare.
Sen. Capito was one of just three Republicans who opposed a bill to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA) – a bill that included defunding Planned Parenthood.
Whitt’s website also quotes Rush Limbaugh:
“Now we find out the Republican caucus in the Senate is infected with essentially leftist members,” Limbaugh said. “Collins, Murkowski, Capito – these three female leftists in the Republican caucus are running the Senate, not Mitch McConnell. Mitch McConnell is not running the Senate. These three women are running the Senate. The conservative Republicans in the Senate are not running the Senate. Three liberal women who call themselves Republicans are running the Senate.”
(Yes, of course, “leftist” Capito is running the Senate!)
Whitt also points to Capito’s lifetime score (which includes her years in the House) from the American Conservative Union to argue that she is one of the most liberal Republicans. Capito was never a liberal but since becoming a senator, Capito’s voting record has become much more conservative. For example, if you look at the 116th Congress, Capito now leads all senators in her support for Trump policies. From FiveThirtyEight:
I don't think this is a realistic challenge but it probably insures that Shelley will be one of the last off the Trump boat if it begins sinking.
