What’s “news” for the Saturday Intelligencer?
Yesterday’s “exhaustive” study by thirteen federal agencies that concluded that humans are the dominant cause of global warming? Or WVU President Gee’s rehashing last Monday of a two-month old study?
Today, on the front page of many U.S. newspapers is a headline similar to this one:
US Report Contradicts Trump Team: Warming Mostly Man-Made
That’s the New York Times headline for an AP article on climate change that begins:
A massive U.S. report concludes the evidence of global warming is stronger than ever, contradicting a favorite talking point of top Trump administration officials, who downplay humans' role in climate change.
The report released Friday is one of two scientific assessments required every four years. A draft showing how warming affects the U.S. was also published. . . .
It's "extremely likely" — meaning with 95 to 100 percent certainty — that global warming is man-made, mostly from the spewing of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere from the burning of coal, oil and natural gas, scientists concluded.
"Over the last century, there are no convincing alternative explanations," the report said.
The results of that important study are nowhere to be found in this morning’s Intelligencer. At the top of today’s front page, however, is this headline:
Gee Pushing ‘West Virginia Forward’
The article begins:
West Virginia University President E. Gordon Gee said the best way to move West Virginia forward is to reshape the size and scope of state government — starting with a revamp of West Virginia’s tax structure, then eliminating duplicate programs and needless mandates within the state.
During a stop in Wheeling this week, Gee discussed the principles set forth in the “West Virginia Forward” study — a collaboration between WVU, the West Virginia Department of Commerce and Marshall University to identify both short-term and large-scale projects to boost West Virginia’s economy.
The rest of the article is about Gee’s take on that study.
Is this news? The Intelligencer first covered “West Virginia Forward” on September 1 with an AP report that said:
In an address Thursday to business leaders at the Greenbrier Resort, West Virginia University President Gordon Gee said he and other officials had collaborated to produce a roadmap for growth and to identify sectors to diversify the economy. . . .
The joint initiative is called West Virginia Forward.
Two weeks later, reporter Casey Junkins referenced it as he covered Gee’s State of the University address.
There is nothing “new” in today’s report and Gee didn’t make these comments yesterday; he made them on Monday when he made his stop in Wheeling. If what Gee said was “news” shouldn’t it have been reported on Tuesday?
Let's see. The Intelligencer ignores an important study on climate change but does give us 5-day-old coverage of a two-month-old news story. Yes, it may be a different day but some things don’t change - it’s still the same “newspaper.” (Hey, aren’t we due for another one of those editorials that tells us what a great job they do keeping us informed?)
