Four weeks ago, I highlighted an article from Politico which asked "Is West Virginia Holding America's Weirdest Election?" It's funny what distance does to perspective -- Politico's description of our governor's race doesn't seem to be as much of an overstatement as it did at the time.
In today's mail was an election flyer that proclaimed in big, bold letters that
JIM JUSTICE IS AN ENVIRONMENTAL DISASTER
Okay. On the other side of the flyer, it states:
IF YOU CARE ABOUT OUR AIR, WATER AND NATURAL RESOURCES . . . VOTE NO ON JIM JUSTICE FOR GOVERNOR
(It's "yes" or "no?" Hey, I thought it was "true - false.")
The mailing was paid for by "RGA RIGHT DIRECTION PAC." RGA stands for "Republican Governor's Association" and their "Right Direction PAC" has spent $700,000 as of two weeks ago on Bill Cole's election campaign. That's right, the outside organization that is financially supporting the Koch-backed and Intelligencer-endorsed candidate who has done absolutely nothing for the environment is telling me that "Justice is an environmental disaster." And what would Bill Cole be? A free-market, non-radical environmentalist?
Yes, the election has gone beyond "weird" although what I wrote after the first gubernatorial debate still applies since it appears that either Justice or Cole will win: we are doomed.
