Thank-you, Mr. Mayor, for saying this
The mayor of Wheeling, Glenn Elliott, comments on the practice of redlining:
I had many people reach out to me afterwards and say that they had never heard of this discriminatory housing practice that systematically denied loans, insurance, and other financial services in predominantly minority neighborhoods. (2/8)

Enter the #WestVirginia Legislature, which appears poised to pass legislation that would create legal peril for anyone teaching anything about redlining that implies that one race (i.e., white people) may have benefited from this practice because of the color of their skin. (4/8)

Now, I recognize that my sentiment here is probably a minority view in WV and even in Wheeling. Bills like "The Anti-Racism Act of 2023" are being run because they are popular not only among the supermajorities in both houses but also with the public at large. (6/8)

The problem is that not kids are being taught about redlining in a way that makes one race feel guilty about it; the problem is they're not being taught about redlining enough, if at all. This @IntelligencerWV op-ed is spot-on, and I hope its message is heard in Charleston. (8/8
