The Wheeling Alternative Awards for 2017

Worst Editorial(s)

Winner: November attacks on Representative Conyers

In November, the local "newspapers" (especially the afternoon News-Register) carried a number of editorials criticizing Democratic Representative John Conyers for sexual harassment. The earlier editorials told us why . . .

Covering/not covering important coal stories

The Intelligencer edits and buries an important energy decision

You’ll need to turn to page 8 of this morning’s Intelligencer to read about an important energy decision that was made yesterday by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). The Intelligencer’s version of the AP report tells us:

An independent energy agency on Monday . . .

Yet another Ogden editorial that tells us "it's the Democrats' fault"

Because it's always their fault

The straw man is back

From this morning’s editorial, “Pass Budget, Then Act on ‘Dreamers,’” in the Wheeling Intelligencer*:

Democratic leaders in Congress seem more interest in political grandstanding than in keeping essential government services available. Their demand regarding budget bills that need to be enacted by January 19 makes that . . .

If you think that the editorials you read in local Ogden newspapers are all written locally, think again

Fake local editorials

Some thoughts on Ogden national debt editorial #2 in what is certain to be a long-running series

The Intelligencer tells us that they expressed concern about the debt even as it was debated (and they lie about editorial #1 to prove it)

Here are the first three paragraphs from this morning’s Wheeling Intelligencer editorial, “Spending Control is Missing in D.C.”:

As members of Congress were debating a massive tax reform bill last month, many critics were vociferous in saying they just could not vote for it for one reason: The measure will increase the national debt.

There . . .

Reading the weekend opinion sections

Nothing out of the ordinary: just more Koch propaganda and the usual Clinton-bashing

More unlabeled Koch propaganda from the Wheeling News-Register

Yesterday’s News-Register featured yet another piece of Koch propaganda pretending to be a serious study. The editorial, “Cutting Back on Regulations,” references a recent study done by the Mercatus Center at George Mason University. The study looked at the number of states’ . . .

Some recent articles on West Virginia and Appalachia that you might find interesting

Periodically I’ve looked around the Web for thoughtful articles about West Virginia and Appalachia. From experience I’ve learned to expect some insights along with the usual stereotypes. This batch is no different. Perhaps it’s the times, the people they’ve talked to, or maybe it’s just a reflection of the pre-conceived attitudes of the . . .
