The Wheeling Alternative

Time to look in the mirror, Mike

Accuracy? Fairness? Or pushing an agenda?

From yesterday’s Mike Myer column:

Some in the media, and that includes newspapers, magazines, television, radio and various internet entities, seem to care less for accuracy and fairness than for pushing their own agendas.

But our local editor doesn’t include our local papers in that group:

But the overwhelming majority of newspaper . . .

Today’s editorial tells us: “Get Bigger ‘Take’ From Sports Bets”

It was obviously written by someone who did little or no research

Today's News-Register editorial explains why the state of West Virginia's take on sports betting should be increased if the U.S. Supreme Court gives the go-ahead:

After buying some computer hardware and software, the casino’s costs would be minimal. Much of the operation would be virtually automatic.

Weirton Medical Center suspends Ogden advertising to protest McCutcheon trade

From Adam Bittner in yesterday's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:

Weirton Medical Center, based in West Virginia, announced Thursday that it is pulling advertising from three publications owned by Ogden Newspapers over “the failure of the Pirates to craft a deal to keep Andrew McCutchen a Pirate.” Nutting is Ogden’s CEO.

“We are doing this not . . .

The death of a newspaper 1

Documenting the Gazette-Mail's move from newspaper to "newspaper"

There’s a lot to be said about the Charleston Gazette-Mail becoming another Ogden Republican, rightwing rag and since the process is just beginning, I’m sure that I’ll get numerous opportunities to comment in the upcoming weeks.

The cheering from those who stand the most to gain from the demise of the state’s most important journalistic voice . . .

Oh the irony: Trump uses a phrase borrowed from Hillary Clinton and the Intelligencer headlines it

The largest headline in this morning’s Wheeling Intelligencer proclaims

Trump Calls for a ‘New American Moment’

The first paragraph from the Associated Press story explains the context:

Addressing a deeply divided nation, President Donald Trump called for a “new American moment” of unity Tuesday night and challenged lawmakers to make good . . .
