Shelley and Joe make news
Following WV’s senators
Senator Shelley Moore Capito
A couple of times a week, for most of the 7+ years that I have been doing this blog, I use a search engine to see what WV’s two senators and the area’s congressman have been doing. Until this year, the results were quite predictable. Joe Manchin was always making news, David McKinley would sometimes make . . .

"I think there is a rule that bans earmarks, but there's also a rule that says we're not bound by the rules."
Following Senator Capito down the rabbit hole on earmarks
Last week, the local “newspapers” featured area congressman David McKinley’s efforts on earmarks. (I wrote about it here.) As a follow-up, I decided to research what WV’s junior senator, Shelley Moore Capito, is saying about the subject.
From Roll Call last month, here is Capito hedging on the Senate rule banning earmarks:

$41.5 million for WV’s 2nd congressional district: Congressman Alex Mooney is “glad that this funding has been secured for health care centers”

More local hypocrisy
Earmarks: we were against them before we were in favor of them
Here is what David McKinley, our local congressional representative, pledged back in 2010 when he first ran for Congress:
No More Earmarks
David refused to insert earmarks into legislation as a member of the West Virginia House of Delegates and he will carry this precedent into Washington by proposing legislation to ban any . . .

Some thoughts on the Ohio County Schools and how it spends its money
Cutting the library’s funding
Last week, the Ohio County School Board cut the funding for the Ohio County Library from $884,547 a year to $589,698. As the Intelligencer reported last Wednesday, the school board president said that the money was needed for improvements to athletic fields.
How bad of a decision was this? In a . . .
